Okay, so this is my third attempt to type this blog post, due to technical difficulties, so it ended up being just over a week later than when I baked this yummy dessert.

The day that I made this was a really tough one. In the morning we had to get rid of our alpacas. (I know I haven’t written about them, but maybe I’ll tell you about our sheep sometime.)

Any ways, I was working on the farm since lunch, and then we had to go in for supper. I was really craving something sweet, so I asked my dad if he would like me to make something for dessert to brighten our day, so he opened up the refrigerator and almost immediately noticed the apples, and said “apple crisp, I want you to make apple crisp for dessert.”

So I quickly got to work and found the Sandhills Family Cookbook and looked up the apple crisp recipe by Delilah Fehr. It has been my dad's go-to recipe for years, so it is the recipe I grew up with. I made the crumbs, then cut up the apples and finally made the sauce. I finished the apple crisp and it was delicious. My family always eats it with vanilla frozen yogurt and whipped topping, but my mom grew up drowning it in milk instead. At first I thought it was weird and didn’t care for it, but I have grown to like it a lot. I hope you try making this sometime, and maybe take my tips about cardamom and cooking it on the BBQ.

Enjoy!

Apple Crisp

Recipe from Sandhills’ Family Favourites (Sandhills Elementary School, La Crete, Alberta)

Submitted by Delilah Fehr

1 cup flour

3/4 cup oatmeal

1 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup melted margarine

1 tsp. cinnamon

4 cups apples

Sauce:

1 cup sugar

2 Tbsp. cornstarch

1 cup water

1 tsp. vanilla

Make crumbs; put half in bottom of pan. Spread apples over.

Sauce: Cook until thick; pour over apples.

Put remaining crumbs on top of apples. Press down lightly. Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes.

Jazzy’s Optional Advice:

Add 1/2 tsp cardamom with the cinnamon

Bake on a wood-fired pellet grill to smoke the dessert as it bakes to give it that something special.
